Scarsdale Police: Con Ed Equipment Stolen, Scams

The following is an update from the Scarsdale Police Department.

The following is an update from Scarsdale Police Department Det. Lt. Thomas J. Altizio:

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Con Edison is reporting incidents of person stealing electrical wire for the scrap metal value. Metal thieves have been cutting and stealing downed power lines as well as new wire spools left at outage site to facilitate repairs. Con Edison will prosecute anyone who steals equipment, and we ask that any suspicious persons in the area of downed electric cables or spools of cables at outage sites be reported to police. Legitimate Con Edison employees will wear or present company identification cards.

There have also been reports of Con Ed impostors trying to scam customers. Anyone suspicious of the actions or requests of someone claiming to be a Con Edison employee should ask to see the employees' Con Edison employee identification card or call the police to verify they are authorized Con Edison personnel.

The Police Department also encourages residents to check on their neighbors who may be elderly or infirm to make sure they are okay, and not in need of assistance.

A regional emergency shelter is at the Albert Leonard Middle School, 25 Gerard Lane, New Rochelle.

The Scarsdale Public Library is also available as a warming station with free coffee and movies in the Scott Room. Residents may charge their cell phones and other electronic devices. Library hours are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
