Local Official Disappointed Old Tappan Zee Bridge Likely Will Not Be Kept As A Park

After a report out today that New York State will likely demolish the existing Tappan Zee Bridge when a new bridge is built, a leading proponent of saving the old bridge for use as a public park expressed his disappointment.

"I’m extremely disappointed," said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. "A Tappan Bridge park would have been a world class destination point, similar to the high line and walkway over the Hudson.  It would have helped the local economy —hotels would generate business from tourists."

The New York State Thruway Authority is now saying that it is not expecting to move forward with proposals to keep the old bridge as a recreational resource. The idea, touted by Feiner, even got some support as Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the option should be explored.

"Local businesses on both sides of the river would have generated more traffic and customers," Feiner said. "And, the quality of life of residents would have been enhanced –with  an amazing bike and pedestrian walkway. I had envisioned concerts and sculpture gardens on the bridge."

Feiner said the park would have added excitement to the overall project.

"I hope the state reconsiders," Feiner said.

An update environmental report on the bridge replacement project is due out today.
