Good evening, this is John Goodwin of the Village Manager's Office providing an update on the emergency water repairs. The initial water main break was repaired by Village forces and water service was restored to customers. Unfortunately, a second break was discovered at the corner of Harvest and Rural Drives, which necessitated water service to be turned off in that area. Village forces are on the scene and unfortunately those homes in the Rural Drive area will be without water service. Those in the immediate area may experience low pressure or discolored water. The discolored water is safe to drink and bath in, but stain clothes if washed in it. The estimated restoration time for water service is prior to 10 PM this evening. We apologize for any inconvenience.

From the Village Manager's Office:
The repairs have been made to the water main on Rural Drive and service has been restored. Residents may notice air and/or discoloration in the immediate area. Discoloration will dissipate over time. Run the cold water for a minute or two just to see if it becomes clear. Use a sink in the basement, near where the water line enters the house, to check the water. Keep checking it approximately every hour until it clears.

Original Story-

Some Scarsdale residents may have noticed the discolored, dirty-looking water late last night or early this morning, when they went to use their sink.

Due to a water main break in the area of Rural Drive, folks are experiencing slow, discolored tap water.

Village officials said the leak will be repaired by 3:00 p.m. today (Wednesday.) Those with discolored water can still drink the water, since it is disinfected, however the water will stain clothes.

Here is the official statement from the Village of Scarsdale:

The Village Water Department is repairing a water leak at Rural Drive. In order to make the repair water service may have to be shut off in the area of the leak. In addition, discoloration of water due to the water leak and its repair may occur in the surrounding area.

Once the repair is made and water service resumed the discoloration will dissipate over time. Run the cold water for a minute or two just to see if it becomes clear. Use a sink in the basement, near where the water line enters the house, to check the water. Keep checking it approximately every hour until it clears.

The water is disinfected but you may want to wait for it to clear up completely before consuming it. Though the water is safe for consumption it may stain clothes if washed in it. Try to avoid using the hot water when the cold water is discolored because you may draw sediment into the hot water system and this sediment may end up settling in the bottom of your the water tank. Also, minimize the flushing of toilets in order to reduce the risk of potential clogging of small tubes and devices within the toilet.

If there are questions you may contact the Water Department during normal working days and hours at 722-1138.
