Scarsdale Students Stepping Out

The Quaker Ridge fifth graders performed their fancy footwork yesterday.

Tapping to the beat, fifth grade students strutted their stuff on stage yesterday at to a crowded audience of classmates, teachers and parents.

The young dancers took part in the annual Fifth Grade Ballroom Dance Performance. Dressed in their best, the kids waltzed, foxtrotted and tangoed to the tunes.

The students, taught by Teaching Artist Nancy Zander, spent the past 10 weeks learning to ballroom dance.

"We make it fun," Zander said of the 20-lessons taught in Scarsdale. "No one knows how to ballroom dance in the fifth grade."

The students "come in a little nervous and afraid," not wanting to hold a classmate's hand, and then blossom into strong ballroom dancers, she said.
