Scarsdale's Greenacres School Collecting Toys

The Greenacres Elementary School is holding a toy drive to donate to students in the Bronx.

Students at the Greenacres Elementary School are busy collecting toys and gifts–not for themselves, but for the students at their sister school in the Bronx.

The school kicked off a Holiday Toy Drive at the end of November and is hoping to provide the 671 students at the PS21 School in the Bronx with a holiday gift this year.

PTA President Melissa Berridge said the school is asking each student to donate two, $15 gifts for the annual toy drive.

"For a lot of these kids, it is the only gift they will receive," Berridge said of the PS21 students. "Our kids really respond to that."

December 11 is the last day to donate, and members of the community can also participate by dropping off a new, wrapped gift to the Main Office at the Greenacres School.

Folks should label each gift with the gender and age the gift is for, she noted.

Staff from the Greenacres School will drive the gifts to the Bronx the morning of December 12.

On December 15, staff at the PS21 school host a holiday party for the students there in the Bronx and gift each child their special toy.

If this is happening in a community like Scarsdale, then as a taxpayer I am irritated. Where are allRead More the taxes going if teachers are paying for their own classroom supplies? There has to be some degree of accountability regarding our tax dollars. We are the highest-taxed county in the nation and we can't afford notebooks and post-it notes? As a community member, I am not going to "lend a hand." I already do that with my tax dollars.
