Join the for upcoming Spanish and Mexican art appreciation courses. “Spanish Artists Throughout History,” is a three-session class led by professor and artist Lynn Mayocole. The course examines the lives and works of several renowned Spanish painters, beginning with artists from Spain’s Golden Age, including Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, Jusepe de Ribera, and Francisco de Zuburán.
The next session explores artists from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries such as Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. The series concludes with Spanish modern artists Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró. Tuition is $90 and the course meets on three consecutive Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wayside Cottage, beginning April 24, 2012.
For an evening of Mexican history and culture, register for “Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo: The Art of Revolution,” which also meets April 24, 2012. Rick Starr, faculty member at Rye Country Day School, will explore the imagery and style in Rivera’s murals as well as in the surrealist paintings of Kahlo, who was both Rivera’s wife and his artistic rival. The class will examine many of the works currently on display in the Rivera exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. The one-session class costs $30 and meets from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at
