4th of July Weekend Fun Around Scarsdale
Scarsdale's fireworks display isn't the only 4th of July weekend event going on in our area. You just have to travel a few minutes out of the village to find a number of fun events this holiday weekend. Here's a list of a few of the things going on:
Rye: "Leaders of Tomorrow"
Where: Rye Village Green, porch of the Rye Free Reading Room
When: July 4, 10:30 a.m.

Cost: Free
Description: The event will feature selected speeches and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. The event takes place on the porch of the Rye Free Reading Room, 1061 Boston Post Rd., and will be followed by patriotic singing and the unfurling of the American Legion’s historic American Flag on the Village Green.

Rye: Playland Fireworks
Where: Playland, 100 Playland Pkwy, Rye
When: July 3, 9:15 p.m.; 4, 9:30 p.m.; 5, 9:15 p.m.
Cost: Parks Admission if you go into the park to watch
Description: Rye Playland treats locals to a spectacular show choreographed to music to kick off the summer’s weekly fireworks shows and to celebrate Independence Day.
Fireworks continue every Wednesday and Friday in July and August at 9:15 p.m.
We suggest parking a few blocks away and walking down to the Playland boardwalk without going into the park. You can avoid the crowds and see multiple fireworks shows going on along the Long Island Sound.
Port Chester: Fireworks Show
When: 7/4/2013, 9 p.m.
Where: Ryan Stadium behind Port Chester High School, 1 Tamarack Road., Rye Brook, NY 10573
Cost: Free
Details: Festivities begin at sundown, show starts after 9 p.m.
City of White Plains Independence Day Celebration
Where: White Plains High School, 550 North St. White Plains, NY
When: Tuesday, July 2 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with a rain date scheduled for the same hours on Wednesday, July 3.
Cost: Free
Description: Residents are encouraged to come early, bring blankets and chairs and enjoy a fun-filled evening of music, games, entertainers, food and fireworks! This year’s celebration will feature a wide variety of entertainment including a performance by Total Soul on the main stage, bringing you Motown’s best. Children and families will enjoy musical entertainment by Squeaky Clean, a visit from the Animal Embassy, the Miz Liz variety show, and even the Spinning Bee Frisbee Showcase as well as Goowins Balloons and the Nimham Mountain Native Americans, in the Kids Corner. Inflatable Party Adventures will offer inflatable rides for only $2 each. Soul food, pizza, fried dough, ice cream, burgers and more will be offered by a variety of different vendors. Ben & Jerry’s will provide ice cream for one dollar.
Tuckahoe: Summertime Fireworks
Where: Tuckahoe Parkway Oval (Lake Avenue and Bronx Street
When: July 6 at 9:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Description: Entertainment begins at 7pm and features music by the Showtime Dance Band. Be sure to come hungry, there will be various food vendors selling traditional street fare food.
St. Bernard’s Church Carnival
Where: 51 Prospect Street, White Plains, NY
When: July 3-6, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Cost: Entry is free; prices vary for rides, games and food.
Description: There will be rides, entertainment, a casino and the “Taste of White Plains.” Call (914)949-2111 for more information.
White Plains: My Flag, My Heart
Where: White Plains Public Library, 100 Martine Avenue, White Plains, NY 10601
When: Sunday, July 7, 2013, 2 PM
Cost: Free
Description: A bilingual celebration of Peruvian culture for children age 3-7. Program
includes arts & crafts, music and games. In collaboration with the Asociación Peruana-Americana de Westchester y Nueva York (APAWNY).
