Osteoporosis Center Opens at Phelps Hospital with Free Educational Seminar February 13

Weak and fragile bones can become a serious problem as you age. To help people deal with problems brought on by low bone mass, or osteoporosis, the Phelps Osteoporosis Center has recently been established at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center.

A multi-disciplinary program under the medical direction of endocrinologist James Hellerman, MD, the center provides comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and support for patients with osteoporosis.

At the center, diagnosis of osteoporosis is made based on a comprehensive medical examination, lab tests, DEXA bone density scans, assessment of family history and other risk factors. An individual treatment plan for each patient may include: medication to increase bone density; individual nutrition counseling; support groups; and monthly group se ssions for education, nutrition guidance and exercise taught by physical and occupational therapists.

On Thursday, February 13, the center will offer the first educational program for osteoporosis patients that will be held on the second Thursday of every month at no charge. Attendees will learn about osteoporosis, study nutritional guidelines to improve bone health, practice bone-strengthening exercise routines and develop techniques to compensate for skeletal limitations.

The event will be held in the Phelps Board Room from 11am to12:30pm. More information about the Phelps Osteoporosis Center can be obtained by calling 914-269-1888.
