Strutting on the Catwalk...For A Cause

The Scarsdale Teen Center is hosting its first ever charity Fashion Show on Saturday to raise money for a local family in need.

The Scarsdale Teen Center is hosting its first-ever charity fashion show on Saturday, February 27, in conjunction with the coveted New York Fashion Week.

The STC has been raising money for the past five months for a local Scarsdale family in need. The fashion show is the second out of five fundraisers planned by the STC for the Agurrie family.

It has taken as little as a month and a half for the STC's Teen Board to organize this entire fundraising event, but the body of work and time invested goes far beyond that.

The Teen Board enlisted assistance from the students of Scarsdale and Edgemont High Schools, along with the Scarsdale Teen Center staff and SHS Social Studies teacher Rashid Silvera.

Rashid Silvera has past experience with fashion-show fundraisers planned by the youth of Scarsdale. He was a model and master of ceremonies for the "Pink Is The New Black: Strutting Our Stuff to Eliminate Breast Cancer" fashion shows back in April 2008 and 2009, which was organized by two SHS juniors.

The Scarsdale and Edgemont students ranging in grades from 7 to 12 will contribute their services by walking as models in the fashion show. They all had to audition in order to participate.

The clothes for the fashion show are donated by the following  local Westchester stores and fashion boutiques. Planit Sports store, located on Wilmot Road in Scarsdale, is known for its custom team apparel and sporting goods and it prides itself on establishing "a sense of community" and focusing on kids. Laurevan Shoes hosts a collection of European-made shoes ranging from Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Germany. No Stone Unturned, located in Bronxville, offers an eclectic collection of unusual jewelry pieces.

The Look boutique, located in Rye Brook, specializes in ultra-glam designer and couture cocktail and day dresses like Vera Wang and Monique Lhuillier. The laid back, classic rock Industry boutique, located in Dobbs Ferry, stocks up on vintage tees, denim, dresses, accessories and more. The family-owned Fontana Bridal Salon, located on White Plains Road in Scarsdale, offers personalized customer service, designer wedding gowns from all over the world, and evening wear.

SKILLA Fashion is a lifestyle brand offering limited and special edition clothing including T-shirts, buttons, belts, hoodies, and polos. The collection is currently only available online. And, finally, the not-for-profit organization Operation Prom located in Bronxville also donated to STC's show. Operation Prom collects prom dresses and bridesmaid dresses in new or gently used conditions.

Given the variety of participating clothing stores and fashion boutiques, the Scarsdale Teen Center's charity fashion show promises a diverse casual and prom-wear showcase. The models' make-up will be handled by Space NK Apothecary located on Harwood Court in Scarsdale.

The overall theme is centered on spring and the prom, both offering a warmer and festive atmosphere than the current inclement snow-and-slush weather Westchester County is currently experiencing.

"Creativity is the most important component of planning a fashion show," explains Tashica Clarke, Program Director of the Scarsdale Teen Center. "We would like to make our fashion show different from any other so we have come up with a creative runway along with a great intermission show with local teen performers."

"Come out and support a great cause," she said.
