The Week Ahead: A Forum on Common Core Curriculum, a Fashion Art Exhibit and a Canine Halloween Party

- Common Core Curriculum Forum: New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. John B. King, Jr. will participate in a community forum in Westchester County on Monday to discuss Common Core Learning Standards and other educational reforms. Monday’s public hearing is one of several being held around the state. Free, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Port Chester Middle School, 223 Bowman Ave. in Port Chester.


- The Manhattan String Quartet: On Tuesday, the Sarah Lawrence College Music Department presents The Manhattan String Quartet, Curtis Macomber (violin), Calvin Wiersma (violin), John Dexter (viola), and Chris Finckel (cello). The group will perform selections from W.A. Mozart & B. Britten. Free, 1:30 p.m. Sarah Lawrence College Reisinger Concert Hall, 1 Mead Way, Bronxville.


- Talk & Tour Presentation on Fashion and Art: Artist Anna Marie Magagna and supermodel Erika Becker Wednesday will discuss “Fashion as Art” at Madelyn Jordon Fine in Scarsdale. Becker was featured in many of the illustrations on view. The discussion will include memories of Bendel's heyday, and retail icon Geraldine Stutz. Fashionable refreshments will be served. - Canine Costume Party: Canines in costume will “pawty” on Thursday at Paws and Play's 2nd Annual Halloween party. The furry guests will vie for a chance to win prizes and be crowned best costume of the day. All dogs participating in event must be evaluated by Paws and Play Staff no later than Monday and must be current on Rabies, Bordetella & Distemper Vaccinations. The event will run throughout the day on Thursday, but the contest will be judged at 2 p.m. Paws and Play Pet Resort and Training Center, 72 Marbledale Road, Tuckahoe.


- The week’s weather calls for mostly cool temperatures, with highs in the mid- to low-50s and lows in the 40s. Wednesday is the day with the highest chance of rain at 40 percent.
