The history of Wayside Cottage begun as early as 1715. Built by Edmund Tomkins, the cottage originally served as an inn and private residence for James Varian and his family from 1761 to 1851. James Butler and his daughter, Emily, then took up residence until the 1910's when, upon her death, the cottage was deeded to the village of Scarsdale.

From 1919 until 1928, the Scarsdale Women's Club convened therein, after which the cottage served as the Scarsdale Library until the books outgrew the house. It was in 1953 that the Junior League of Central Westchester, comprised of women from Scarsdale, White Plains, Greensburgh and Eastchester, adopted the house as the headquarters for their community works of charity, goodwill and volunteerism.

To arrange a tour of Wayside Cottage, contact the Junior League of Central Westchester during business hours.
