JM - That's right!! The uber-liberal LoHud would be correct. Right-sizing piggishly rich benefitRead More and pension programs mean give-ups by those receiving them. You don't have to be a math wiz to get the numbers on this. If you pay NOTHING toward your health benefits and now I ask you to pay 10%, you are giving up some income. Most Americans in the PRIVATE sector would do anything to work for a company that pays 90% of the cost of their healthcare benefit costs and gives them a piggishly rich pension. The pension needs to be terminated, as many companies have done, and converted to a 401(k) like all the rest of us have in the REAL world.
jeff meyer April 22, 2014 at 06:28 pm
NYP, Most Americans in the private sector would be better served if they were unionized. DecentRead More health care and a DBP pension are the results of a union job. That is why the JETBLUE pilots voted to unionize today according to the Wall Street Journal. In the REAL world workers should organize and negotiate in the collective bargaining process. There is strength in organizing. JM Tuckahoe, NY
sawyer1952@aol.com April 23, 2014 at 09:25 am
Perhaps everyone should reread this article without predjudice. The union workers know that payingRead More for health care is a given BUT look at the salary increases - 0%, 0%, 2% and 2% - this means that workers will be getting paid LESS in order to cover their health benefits. A salary drop of 6% at least. ALl the union wants is fair wage for fair work. A 4% increase over 4 years and a 10% reduction for benefits doesn't make sense.

That Newsmax article constantly says this is a way to circumvent the Constitution. But since theRead More Constitution grants states the right to award their EC votes any way they want, this is perfectly legal. A state could decide to award its EC votes based on a contest. Have the Democratic nominee and the Republican nominee guess how many jelly beans are in a jar. Closest one gets the EC votes for their party.

Either an 18 year old is an adult or not. The age for voting, army enlistment, legal drinkingRead More & smoking should be the same. I am willing to say that this council needs time in exec. session to clean up the mess made.Read More Litigation strategy and personnel specific issues should not be worked out in public but the courts construe that narrowly. Just because it's "related to" a legal matter or an employee doesn't give you leeway to be secretive. I am giving Joe the benefit of the doubt here. It is still so refreshing to have the last 4 years behind us -- and that includes Catherine as a collaborator -- the only minority vote more often than not was Joe. For that reason he has a little more of a honeymoon. The corner park issue is simple though. He just needs to send a crew in there to shovel up the gravel and charge whomever laid it in the first place. Then get volunteers from the garden club to make it a pocket park. Problem solved.
Anne McCarthy April 3, 2014 at 04:21 pm
Easy enough, Charmian, and it sounds lovely. It won't be happening any time soon though. I spokeRead More to the owner/realtor of 2 Central. It will be ready for lease on June 1st. Since they don't have a tenant and there will likely be leasehold improvements, I doubt a business opens there until at least July 1st. It will take several months to observe parking and traffic patterns and then the TPS will make a biased recommendation to try to legitimize the theft. We will be past spring and summer and well into fall. BTW, the owner/realtor told me -as an interested lessee- that I could have all 5 spaces in the back (plus the handicap makes 6). I asked about the tenants in the 2 apts upstairs and was told they would only have overnight use of on-site parking. Oh, goodie! Something else to follow-up on the legality of - the variances were given making sure 2 spots were allocated to the apts. The neighborhood has 2-hour parking, where will these tenants put their cars all day if they commute by train? And when they travel?

This bridge is massively over priced. $14-$16 tolls. It will cost Rocklanders way more to cross theRead More bridge. Where is Nita Lowey on this? Why isn't she looking out for Rockland residents and limiting the toll. All she has done is borrowed 1 Billion dollars which we the NYS tax payer has to pay back. bibliophile March 23, 2014 at 06:24 pm
Let's stop with the euphemisms. ILLEGAL, not "undocumented" is what should be used allRead More the time. Every time this country give out "amnesty" to millions of ILLEGALS, more come illegally and those who wait on line to request entry legally get screwed. I have family living in other countries who would admit them legally since the quota for Europeans had been met here. So, pardon me if I have no sympathy. How about a Dream Act to cut tuition rates for those legally living here and who are burdened with loans, but persevere to get a degree. It took me ten years to pay off my students loans, but I did it to get a BA, MA and a MS!
