Five Things You Need to Know This Weekend: Japan Relief Efforts, Mommy-and-Me Yoga and Seussical the Musical!

It's finally the weekend!

1. Run – don’t walk— towards this good cause. The Scarsdale High School track and field team will be hosting a run/walk-a-thon on Saturday morning to benefit relief efforts for Japan. Buy sweet treats at an adjoining bake sale and walk off the calories as you raise money based on a “per-lap” system. Overall donations are aso accepted. 100 percent of proceeds will go straight tot he American Red Cross. All members of the Scarsdale community are welcome to attend and participate in this event. The walk-a-thon will be held from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Scarsdale High School track. E-mail ericdobosh@gmail.com for more information.

2. Horton may have heard a Who, but tonight, audiences in the Scarsdale Middle School auditorium will be hearing the strains of local children’s voices as they sing and strut their way through Seussical Jr., a musical that brings to life Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, lazy Mayzie and Gertrude McFuzz. Swing by Scarsdale Middle School at 7:30 p.m. either tonight or tomorrow for a whimsical – or should we say, whim-seuss-ical – dose of childhood nostalgia. Tickets are $10.

3. Ask most moms whether they feel most “centered” while juggling a tiny tot in their arms, and they’ll probably say no. Gymboree Play and Music, however, is offering a Mommy and Me yoga class sure to stretch your hamstrings – not your patience – this afternoon from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. You’ll get to do the downward dog and cobra stretch as your babies laugh, fuss and cry on an adjoining yoga mat – and everything will be OK. And who knows? Maybe your little one’s first word will be “Ohm.” Tickets are $15 for Gymboree and Full Circle Full Circle Family Care members and $20 for non-members. E-mail scarsdaleny@gymboreeclasses.com to reserve a space, and make sure to bring your own yoga mat.

4. Arts and the economy merge tonight at ArtsWestchester, where the Bank & Trust Show, “Contemporary Artists Respond to the Economy,” will feature sculpture, video, installation and performance works. All works will examine society’s views towards economy, trust and value. And the best part of all? Even though the exhibit examines contemporary attitudes towards money, tonight’s opening, running from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., is free! Call (914) 428-4220 for all inquries.

5. What are the most important issues facing Scarsdale right now? Read an interview with new mayor Miriam Levitt-Flisser later this afternoon to hear her thoughts on taxes, Village nightlife and the reason she ran for mayor.
