Five Things You Need to Know Today: A Brooke Hayward Q&A, Battling Blood Cancer and Exploring the Afterlife

So it's a rainy Monday. Here are some activities that will inspire you to slip on your galoshes and get out of your house instead of curling up into a ball in front of the TV.

  1. You can raise money for blood cancer while getting your own blood pumping as well through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training. Tonight, the Team in Training is holding an informational meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Scarsdale Public Library. Learn how the program’s endurance training program can get you in shape for half-marathons, marathons, triathlons and hiking adventure— and make a difference in the lives of leukemia and lymphoma patients – by visiting the Society’s website, calling (914) 821-8363 or emailing mo.lyons@lls.org.
  2. What happens after you die? Rabbi Jonathan Blake will explore Judaism's conception of death and the afterlife in the second part of a five series lecture titled "Death, Immortality and Afterlife in Judaism" tonight from 7:15-9:15 p.m. at Westchester Reform Temple. Explore texts and traditions with the Rabbi as you reexamine your faith and hopefully find deeper comfort, meaning and understanding in its message.
  3. Truman Capote once called Brooke Hayward’s 1977 memoir “Haywire” one of the “most extraordinary personal memoirs” he’d ever read. Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Hayward – the daughter of elite Hollywood couple Margaret Sullavan and Leland Hayward – will participate in a Q&A session at the Jacob Burns film festival along with longtime friend and Academy Award-nominated director Buck Henry. Pick up your very own copy of the recently-reissued “Haywire”  before taking in a screening of the Margaret Sullavan film “The Shop Around the Corner.” Tickets are $20 for members and $30 for non-members. Visit the Center’s website for more information.
  4. 4. SoulCycle, the indoor biking mecca that’s taken both Manhattan and Scarsdale by storm, is now offering free community rides every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Get in shape for summer and reserve a bike by calling the Scarsdale studio every Monday beginning at 1 p.m. at (914) 713-1200.
  5. Scarsdale Patch is now offering blogging opportunities for locals passionate about sharing their voices and representing their communities—and you can be a part of it!
