Five Things You Need to Know Today: Clear Skies, Water Main Breaks and Snowy Fire Hydrants

Today's skies will be sunny, a water main broke yesterday on Hampton and Butler roads, and the Scarsdale Fire Department requests that you clear ice and snow off your hydrants.

1. Look outside right now. What is that bright light? Is it a descending space craft’s bright beams streaming through snow clouds? An archangel descended from heaven to bless The Huffington Post’s business merger with AOL? Could it be… sunlight?! That’s right, folks – according to the National Weather Service, today is supposed to be mostly sunny, albeit windy, with temperatures dipping down to 27 degrees by 5 p.m. and gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Clear skies have been forecasted for the rest of the week, so switch off your sunlamps and go for a stroll outside for a quick boost of Vitamin D.

2. Yesterday, there was a water main break on Hampton and Butler roads around 4:20 p.m. The Village Water Department should have repaired the leak by now, but if you live in the area and you find discoloration in your water, just run the tap for a minute or two until it becomes clear.

3. For many women, it’s that time of the year where you want to buy new clothing to boost your winter-depleted spirits… and also that awkward transition in clothing stores from cozy winter sweaters to skimpy summer stock that won’t be suitable for another three months. The best part about this sartorial snafu? The sales, of course! Great Stuff, located on 27 Spencer Place, is currently holding a 50 percent-off sale off the majority of last fall and winter’s merchandise. Cashmere hoodies, sheer T-shirts and softly draped cardigans are only a few of the store’s clearance items.

4. The Scarsdale Fire Department does a lot for you – and now they want you to do a little something for them. Have you ever thought about how many fire hydrants are in town? Almost a thousand! The Village’s career and volunteer firefighters work tirelessly all winter to clear snow from each hydrant in case of a fire emergency. Help them out – and perhaps help save a burning home – by shoveling off your own neighborhood hydrants just in case the groundhog’s prediction doesn’t come true and we really have an additional six weeks of winter in store until spring.

5. The Scarsdale Public Library will be holding a Chess for Children – Beginners class at 6:30 p.m. It’s never too early to inculcate genius – or teach your children a hobby that will distract them from homework and prevent them from arriving at the dinner table on time. But hey, it’s more mentally stimulating than Playstation 3.
