Five Things You Need to Know Today: International Women's Day, Dog Obedience Classes and a Westchester-Based Home Makeover Show

Celebrate International Women's Day at Sarah Lawrence College, whip your wayward dog into shape with Dog Obedience Classes and find out how your house can qualify for a home makeover show.

1. Happy International Women’s Day! International Woman’s Day was originally celebrated on March 8, 1911. Today, the holiday will be commemorated at Sarah Lawrence College, where the origin of “Women’s History Month” can be traced back to the college’s 1979 Women in History Institute. Featured speakers, including Priscilla Murolo, Ph.D., Rona Holub, Ph.D.  Nana Fosu Randall, founder of Voices for African Mothers, will gather in Titsworth Lecture Hall at 6 p.m. to weigh in on women’s rights. Call (914)-395-2412 for more details.

2. When one thinks of meditation and inner peace, they probably conjure a Buddhist sage sitting lotus style on top of a sun-illuminated mountain. It turns out, however, that there’s more than one path towards enlightenment. Tonight, Rabbi Tzvi Sytner kicks off “The Personal Power Series,” a three-part lecture series that teaches listeners how to use ancient Jewish wisdom to alleviate stress. “The Personal Power Series” will be held tonight at 1495 Weaver Street at 8 p.m. For more information, call (914) 861-JRE1.

3. Last night’s School Board meeting at Scarsdale High School received nearly 100 attendees – all who wanted to speak their minds during an hour-long open floor session. Local elementary school parents were concerned that rising costs and shrinking budgets would cause class sizes to expand. What was the School Board’s response? Find out in a fully summary of meeting later tonight on Scarsdale Patch.

4. If Fido’s a bit too frisky, you can register him for Dog Obedience Classes through the Village Parks & Recreation Department. Classes will be led by Barbara Dille, founder of the White Plains School of Animal Training and owner of The Dille Canine Connection in White Plains. Classes begin Saturday, April 9. To pre-register, visit the Parks & Recreation website.

4. Do you know someone who has an eccentrically decorated or lovingly disheveled house? Don’t refer them to an interior decorator or a restoration company – send them to the Home Television Network! The network is hosting a that will feature made-over Westchester homes. It's amazing what a little paint and some crown molding can do, huh?
