Five Things You Need to Know Today: Russian Films, Local Singing Sensations and Monthly Mitzvahs

Today, watch a Russian film screening, listen to local alt-rocker Patti Rothberg perform songs from her new CD and prepare a kosher meal for the needy.

  1. Village residents are right on the brink of beginning their summer, but tonight, the Scarsdale Public Library will show a film about the season’s end. Russian director Alexei Popogrebsky’s “How I Ended This Summer” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. as part of the library’s monthly Adult Independent Film Series. Chronicling the research of two meteorologists working on a weather station in the Arctic Circle, the film’s portrayal of the tension between the older co-worker, Mr. Puskepalis, and his younger counterpart, Pavel, parallels the tumultuous relationship between Old and New Russia –transforming an otherwise bleak tale of isolation and loneliness into an astute political commentary examining the nation’s dichotomous history. Admission is free to the public. For more information, call (914) 722- 1300 or visit the library’s website.
  2. Her new album may be called “Overnight Sensation,” but Patti Rothberg, the chart-topping 90s alt-rocker who graduated from Scarsdale High School, has been building her career since her first single, “Inside,” climbed the Billboard’s Alternative Songs Charts in 1996. Tonight, the singer-songwriter will swing by the Watercolor Café in Larchmont at 8 p.m. to perform songs from her latest CD. Tickets are $10. To find out more, visit the café’s website or call (914) 834-2213.
  3. Perform your good deed for the day before most people have even finished their first morning cup of coffee. At 9 a.m., Westchester Reform Temple will be holding its “monthly mitzvah,” in which participants use Israeli products to create a delicious kosher meal for the needy. Get involved by calling (914) 723-7727 or visiting the Temple’s website – all helping hands are welcome!
  4. The Scarsdale Public Library has been a solid community cornerstone for 83 years – and will continue to be so far into the future, thanks to Senator Suzi Oppenheimer’s announcement yesterday informing the Village that their favorite local source of literary knowledge will receive $111,280 in library construction grants to improve the library’s HVAC system. Made possible from the $14 million in capital funds that were made available for public, the grant monies will ensure that the Scarsdale Public Library has means to house books, films and lovers of literature far into the distant future.
  5. Now that the weather’s finally warm, it’s time to start thinking about what you will do this summer during that ever-so-awkward limbo period between the school year’s end and the time your son or daughter starts their summer internship or travels upstate to sleepaway camp. Luckily for you, Sharon Rosenthal, the Scarsdale High School Varsity Field Hockey Coach, will be conducting a Spring Field Hockey Clinic for girls in grades 2-8 from Monday, June 13 to Thursday, June 16. Fill the gaps in your young athlete’s summer schedule by visiting the Scarsdale Recreation Department’s website and signing her up for the clinic. Hopefully, she’ll have a blast dribbling, passing, shooting and scoring her way into the summer season.
