Five Things You Need to Know Today: Summer Reading, Skating Parties and Saving the Trees

Donate books to the Scarsdale Public Library's annual book fair, skate and bike your way through the Village's streets and learn why you - and your child - should care about nature.

1. Tomorrow night, you can roll your way into summer by enjoying Scarsdale’s “Bike and Blade Night.” Hosted by Scarsdale’s Chamber of Commerce, Recreation and Police departments, this outdoor festival allows elementary and middle school students to grab their rollerblades or mountain bikes and pedal, cruise and glide through the Village’s downtown streets. Free safety inspections will also be performed to make sure your spokes and spinners are in top-notch shape. This event runs from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and is free to the public. For more information, call (914) 722-1160 or email dwalczewski@scarsdale.com.

2. It doesn’t matter whether you’re searching for “Mr. or Mrs. Right” or “Mr. or Mrs. Right Now” – all that matters is that you have a good time participating in the Jewish Renaissance Experience’s Friday night singles social. Sip, much and mingle as you enjoy dinner, drinks and the company of brand-new friends. This event costs $15 and is open to ages 40-55.  For more information, visit the Jewish Renaissance Experience's website or email tzvisytner@thejre.org.

3. Save the trees – Sesame Street-style! Tomorrow, puppeteer Jill Liflander will host an educational puppet show preaching the positive benefits of nature at the Greenburgh Nature Center. Swing by the Center at 10:30 a.m. to watch Liflander and her felted friends sing and converse their way into your child’s social consciousness. Pricing is $3 for members; $8 for non-members. To learn more, visit the Greenburgh Nature Center’s website or call (914) 723-3470.

4. Calling all clotheshorses! Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) is issuing a “clothes call” to launch “Pass It On Kid’s Closet,” a new program providing new and gently-used children’s items to needy Westchester families. Possible items include clothing and shoes, select baby supplies and new children's socks, underwear, pajamas, baby bottles and sippy cups. Donations can be dropped off during business hours at WJCS Headquarters at 845 North Broadway in White Plains, or they also can be bought directly to Kid's Kloset by calling (914) 761-0600 extension 715 or contacting Volunteer Director Stephanie Roth at kidskloset@wjcs.com.

5. Old meets new when you stock up on summer reading options at the Friends of the Scarsdale Library’s annual library book fair! Until August 27, you can drop off your gently used books – excluding textbooks, business and travel books – at the library for a sale that will help raise funds for new items and program support. To volunteer, contact Kathey Steve at Steves10583@gmail.com or stop by the library’s main desk to be directed to the sorting area.
