Five Things You Need to Know Today: Win Zabar's Bagels, Register for Saturday Chess Club, Catch Scarsdale Resident on 'Emeril's Table'

Register your budding grand master for Saturday Chess Club, enjoy free homemade bagels from Zabar's during your next city sojourn and watch local resident Molly Bochner join forces with Elmo in today's Halloween episode of "Emeril's Table."

1. Today's Halloween episode of "Emeril's Table" will host two very special guests — one from "Sesame Street," the other from Scarsdale. At 11 a.m., switch on the Hallmark Channel for a chance to catch both Elmo and local resident Molly Bochner as they assist Emeril in making a host of Halloween-themed treats: Grilled Cheese Sand-wiches, Spooky Boo Cupcakes and Black Cat Cookies with a bittersweet ganache.

2. Last weekend officially marked the Saturday Chess Club's first meeting! Don't worry, however, if you were too busy recuperating from a busy week to sign your son or daughter up for the chance to battle other local children in the ultimate game of wits. Registration is still open and additional information is available on the Village Recreation Department's website. The Chess Club is held every Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. at the . Scarsdale residents pay $90 and non-residents pay $140. Since registration is done through the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, register online or bring a check to the first day of class. 

3. Do you often commute to New York City for work or play? If so, you might be familiar with Zabar's, the favorite Upper West Side food emporium of suburban and urban foodies alike. This week, Zabar's is offering Patch readers the chance to win one free order of toasted bagels from Zabars.com. 4. When you're in middle school, braving a bully is no small feat. Tonight, Principal Michael McDermott will be giving a lecture, "The Roots of Empathy: One School's Story," about the school's history of promoting schoolwide student empathy through anti-bullying projects and curriculum work. Learn how your local educators are keeping students safe from harrassment tonight by swinging by the SMS Band Room at 7:15 p.m. 

5. Chances are, your nonprofit wants to save both the ozone layer and the world. Green Mountain, a retail provider of cleaner energy, is donating solar array systems to qualifying New York-area nonprofits through its New York chapter of the Green Mountain Energy Sun ClubSM. The deadline to submit applications online is by Monday, Oct. 31. Donations will also be considered for applicants looking to install other technology using solar power to generate pollution-free electricity or heat water.
